The Best and Cheapest Music Production Setups

Are you a bedroom music producer looking for a high-quality music production setup for very little expense? If so, you have come to the right place. We have compiled a list of the best (and cheapest) solutions for bedroom music producers’ setups.

Selecting The DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)

selecting the correct daw (FL Studio)
selecting the correct daw (FL Studio)

To start you off, you need a good digital audio workstation (or DAW) to get your feet off the ground with music production from home. The best version of this software would have to be FL Studio.

This software works with most computer systems, and it is a great base for those looking for something simple to get started with. As you move forward with music production, you’ll want to look for a paid product more suited to your needs, but FL Studio is the best of the DAWs you can find.

Virtual Instruments (VST Plugins)

Another must-have download to achieve the best sound quality and greatest product possible in your creation is virtual studio technology or VSTs. A VST provides you with the ability to add instrumental sounds or sound effects to your music.
spitfireaudio vst pluginsSpitfire LABS is the first free VST plug-in we’re recommending. Including a selection of wonderful sounding instruments free of charge, this download provides sounds that work for any genre of music.
native instruments komplete startNative Instruments’ Komplete Start is another great program for adding instruments into your music. With seven synths, nine sample instruments, and multiple sound effects, you’ll have plenty of reason to love this software.

Lastly, if you’re looking for more synth vibes, Vember Audio’s Surge will meet all of your needs. This software includes over 1,000 preset patches, 183 wavelengths, and many sound effects. The best part is it’s free to download and use.

Condenser Microphones & Studio Monitors

condenser microphones and studio monitors
The last aspect of your setup as a bedroom music producer will cost you some money, but it will ultimately be worth it. This is the physical part of your equipment, such as condenser USB microphones and studio monitors (speakers) to plug into your computer.

While it may seem unnecessary to buy additional versions of these items when your computer most likely already has some sort of built-in microphone and speaker already, it is definitely crucial to find better versions of this hardware in order to produce high-quality sounding songs.

As far as studio condenser microphones, we recommend the Shure SM57(for studio recording) and SM58 (for live performances). These are strong and built to last.
For Studio Monitors (speakers), we would choose either the Presonus Eris 3.5 studio monitors or the M-Audio BX5 D3 sets.

These are both great choices, on the less expensive side but still of high quality, with the intention of creating music in their design.

Midi Keyboard

midi keyboards
Midi keyboard is an external device that enables music producers to express their creativity and input they midi input into the computer. Program the piano keynotes into virtual music.
We have made a list of the best 8 Best Budget MIDI Keyboards for Modern Music Producers that we recommend you check out.

M-Audio Key Station Mini midi keyboard or Akai MPK Mini Mk2 both would be a great start to a cheap bedroom music production setup.

Audio Interface

USB audio interface
This is a very crucial part of your bedroom studio (music production studio), without an audio interface you will not be able to connect your midi keyboard, studio monitors, and condenser microphone all into your DAW which is then sending feedback out from your computer.

importance of audio interface
We recommend using PreSonus AudioBox USB 96 which will do the right job or you could also use Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB audio interface.

Overall, there are many inexpensive versions of software out there for you to choose from as a bedroom producer. However, making the right choice can be the difference between producing a rocking song or a failure. If you follow our advice, you’ll be sure to turn out a hit in no time.
